The New Balance 2002R Black Fig is fitted with a retro, chunky, off-white midsole packed with N-rgy cushioning. However, this shoe has modern performance upgrades, welcoming it to the new era.

The shoe gets a futuristic look from its sleek curves and cutouts strategically placed on the shoe. The soft suede overlays sit well on a muted mauve mesh base, all constructed in a pale violet hue. These give the shoe a minimalist aesthetic that the white leather heel tab and metallic silver "N" logo stray from, giving the shoe a little bit of contrast.

New Balance released the shoe on January 29, 2022, retailing at around $130.
